After you click "Submit," what is the server busy with? Starting from that question, we look at how one job connects requirements, execution and feedback.

Understanding today's problem

First confirm how the API will be used: what data it receives, which business rules it follows, and how it responds on failure. Aligning on the boundaries with product and frontend is part of the work that comes before coding.

Moving forward with the team

Implement the business rules as a service, and check for duplicate requests, data consistency and permissions. The key rules have to run on the server; they cannot rely on restrictions in the page alone.

Delivery and continuous improvement

Verify the normal flow and the error cases together with QA and frontend. After release, watch for request errors and record problems and how they were handled, so the team can keep maintaining it.

Role names help us understand the division of labor, and daily collaboration is what truly connects those divisions.

A day in the role

The work, step by step

01Design and build the API

Confirm what data it receives, which business rules it follows, and how it responds on failure.

02Keep data consistent and permissions correct

Check for duplicate requests, concurrent writes and unauthorized access, with the key rules enforced on the server.

03Integration testing and release

Verify the normal flow and the error cases together with frontend and QA.

04Observe after launch

Watch the error rate and slow requests, and record problems and how they were handled.

Across the eras

Where this work appears in the timeline

  1. Connection Era

    1969–1993

Systems programmers, writing operating systems, network protocol stacks, and Unix tools.

  2. Web

    1994–2000

CGI, Perl, and ASP programmers, writing message boards, forums, and news publishing systems, using Access and MySQL databases.

  3. Community & Search Era

    2001–2008

Shifts toward high concurrency and distributed systems. The daily work is sharding databases and tables, adding caching, optimizing slow queries, and writing business logic in Java/PHP.

  4. Mobile Era

    2009–2015

Writes APIs, builds high-concurrency systems (flash sales, ticket rushes, red packets), and begins splitting services apart.

  5. Cloud & Intelligence Era

    2016–2022

Microservices and cloud-native development, increasingly wired into data compliance requirements (masking, permissions, auditing).

  6. Large Model Era

    2023–present

Wrapping business capabilities into tools the model can call (API/MCP), and handling asynchronous long-running tasks, cost and rate limiting.
